A Seasonal Tradition That Burns Through the Generations

The custom of burning a Yule Log dates back to the Middle Ages, appearing first in the Scandinavian countries. During the winter, this region spends more time in darkness than in sunlight, with northern Norway spending up to 24 hours in the dark in the days before the Winter Solstice! Trees, and later, large logs were brought into the home and placed on the hearth for light and heat during this cold, dark time. Through the years, families created their own special traditions around the Yule Log involving Winter Solstice Festivals and The Twelve Days of Christmas.

What traditions do you celebrate with your family this season? Will you visit the Trail of Lights and stop to warm your hands at the Yule Log? Will you visit the Zilker Tree and spin under its magnificent, dizzying lights, or volunteer for a sevice project to help those in need? This season there are so many opportunities to share and spend time with family and friends. I hope that amid the hustle and bustle of the season, you find the moments to be thankful and feel gratitude that another year passed that you were able to experience life... and maybe remember, too, that we live in one of the best cities in the world where the sun shines almost everyday.
