According to the Commerce Department, from August to September 2017, new home sales in the U.S. rose 19 percent, an annual rate of 667,000, which is the highest level since 2007. This number was boosted by a flurry of activity in the South after Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. New home sales were strong in other parts of the country as well, with the Midwest showing an increase of over 10 percent within the same time period.

China’s Financial Reform Spurs Optimism for Real Estate

For the first time this year, China’s government has loosened its capital control by abolishing a rule to reserve 20 percent on forward sales of foreign exchange, and by also striking a requirement for banks to hold reserves against renminbi deposits. This will cause the RMB exchange rate to be more flexible, which is good news for Chinese consumers looking to invest in real estate abroad. It is projected that there will soon be 1.87 million high net worth individuals in China, many of whom are looking for property investments overseas.
